Weekly Roundup: Set Your Hashtags to Fabulous!

Happy Presidents’ Day!

I’d like to say that “OMGZ I GOT SO MUCH DONE ON OMG!ORCS!” in a super exciting font, but I didn’t. I have a hard time with the entire balancing work + hobbies thing. I should put on a giant t-shirt that says, “HOW DO I ADULT?” Said shirt would have a cat on it, of course. A bad case of insomnia didn’t help matters either.

An Awesome Discovery

What do you get when you hashtag FAILZ and can’t sleep? Discover shows on Netflix. I hate to say it, but I only had enough brain power for TV and graphic making.

I found an awesome anime, Sword Art Online. If you play MMOs and like sword fights, badass costumes, and fantasy, I highly recommend it!

A Proclamation of Goal Setting
Omg!Orcs deserves only the best
I hereby force myself to come up with a routine that will allow me to write, revise, and draw. There has to be a way to beat the after work brain shutdown (AWBS). I miss my Omg!Orcs characters! Even their shenanigans and tropes can’t defeat the AWBS right now!

V-Day Contest Winner!
*Drum roll*

Thank you for entering, D!
You will get an email as soon as I finish this post.

Weekly Roundup: Hashtag Fab

~ Your number one source of Empire News!

I have been a bad sci-fi fan and geek lately. I haven’t been keeping up with the latest and most awesome geekdom news. *Slaps wrist* The most exciting thing to happen to me this week was getting my bus card in the mail. You have no idea how excited I am about it…It will make traveling easier.
I am putting the finishing touches on The Emerald Dress! Keep your eyes out for it because it is sauntering its way into existence soon.
I did learn of something of note this week, so all is not lost to the ever distracted maze that is my mind. Apparently you can pay to have an envelope of glitter anonymously mailed to your enemies. Wut? Yes! Google it and laugh.
I couldn’t help but put my own twist on it.
A Tale of Two Elf Lords
Thranduil mails his frenemy, Elrond, a scroll of glitter because Thranduil is
Elrond is not inclined to appreciate Thranduil’s sparkling gift.

Then again, Elrond doesn’t have a special 24/7 glitter taskforce at his beck and call.

Weekly Roundup: Klingon Squirrels and Forgotten Treasures

~ Your number one source of Empire News!

This Week in Awesome

It doesn’t get more awesome than winning a Warrior Woman CD! I entered the G & T Show’s Martok Squirrel contest.

This just in: a police sketch of the elusive Martok Squirrel. Authorities report that he was last seen on Fallen Acorn 9 and is headed for HiddenNutia Prime.

It is reported that he is hoarding several crates of acorns. If you happen to see or have any information on General Martok Squirrel, please contact your nearest Federation security outpost!

The cover of the CD itself is badass. There is no other way to put it.

About the G & T Show:
“The G & T Show is an irreverent podcast dedicated to quality storytelling, interesting characters, and the latest news emerging in and around the Star Trek Universe. However, we are so much more than just another Star Trek podcast. We discuss films, television shows, books, comics, games, fan productions, conventions, cosplay, and so much more. The G & T Show is the premiere podcast for the modern Geek “

Forgotten Treasures

You’d be amazed at the things you forgot you saved to a flash drive, the one that’s been shoved into the darkest corner of that drawer you never open….

I found a 32 page novella I wrote during my last year of college. I remembered it as soon as I saw the file name. I also remembered how much I slaved over that thing with revisions…so I read it. It is a polished story that is almost ready to go! I couldn’t believe my luck at finding this forgotten gem.

A preview of the cover (it may or may not change)
The Outlanders
I think I may have to change my game plan because I want to make sure that I complete the comic. The amount of time I spend per page on the thing is astronomical–no joke! You would not believe the hours creating a single scene takes. I just can’t keep up, and I feel bad!
I am much faster at drawing things by hand. As much as I adore digital art, it takes me a looooooooong time to finish a single picture. Comics have a variety of things going on in a single page. Spending five hours on one page is finishing it in record time for me (just to give you an idea). Why am I rambling on and on about this? I decided that I’m going to do a test run with black & white pencil/ink pages.

Weekly roundup: 2014 edition!

~A quick recap of things around Empire Earth over the past week. 2014.
Yes, folks, this is an annual “let’s recap last year” post!

Okay, so I had to do one of these of Elly and Major Pierson after that Elrond and Thranduil one. I just have a soft sport for making party glasses and sparkle gifs!

2014 in…

Personal Art Goals
If you are an artist, you will understand me when I say that there were certain things that bugged me about my drawings. I was determined to improve my characters’ eyes and facial expressions. Trying to draw realistic eyes on a cartoon face can turn into a massive case of FAIL. I felt that my characters had “dead eyes” a lot of the time, so I set out to fix that!

January’s beauty has a case of dead eyes, but you can see improvements as the months progressed!

My favorite drawing of 2014

Writing

Anyone who follows this blog knows the huge news of my debut novel, The Year is Now! I’ll keep this section brief. I had been working on that thing since 2010, so when I held that first copy in my hands, I was filled with a great sense of accomplishment and excitement.

Want an autogrpahed copy? Head on over to Contact Me! Want to check out the first chapter? Read it here: The Year is Now – Read the First Chapter!

2014 favorites
Things that came out in 2014 or things I read/watched/saw/experienced in 2014

Movie
I am horrible with keeping up with current movies. I saw two movies in theatres last year (just to give you an idea). Out of those two, my favorite was The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (technically it came out in 2013, but I saw it in 2014).

Book
Hands down, The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. Yes, it beats out George R.R. Martin’s hefty (but awesome) tomes. I devoured that book and was obsessed within the first few pages. Needless to say, I now own it!

Show
Attack on Titan. I discovered it on Netflix at the beginning of last year. If you like anime and don’t mind reading subtitles, go watch it! I liked it so much that I got myself a Survey Corps jacket and cloak.

Travel Destination
Washington DC. I still have one of the pictures I took of the White House as my wallpaper on my computer. I want to visit that place again. Hoping on a train and going to Union Station was by far the most awesome experience I had in 2014. You can read my post about it and see some pictures here: Star Spangled City.

What were your favorite movies, books, shows, and experiences of 2014?
Post your favorites on The Command Deck’s facebook page!

Video of the Week
When I see a title like “Kim Jong Un is flying a plane,” I have to click on it. I can’t understand the announcer, but she is very excited about this.

Let us not neglect “Putin flies with rare cranes in an ultralight.” Sadly, there are no excited announcers or cheerful music for this one.

I scoured YouTube for fitting Barack Obama videos. This is what I found >.<  Mr. President, you have until 2016 to learn to fly a badass fighter jet and post it on YouTube!

Excerpt Time, But First…

It looks like I missed this week’s Weekly Roundup. I blame the holidays, but don’t worry! I’ll make up for it. Here is an excerpt from Lucius Sinclair. Want to read the full thing? It is now FREE to download from the iBookstore and Lulu!

Elrond and Captain Kirk gearing up for New Years Eve.
Gentlemen, it is not for another two days!
Excerpt from Lucius Sinclair
The following is (c) M.L. Crabb 2013
The anthem trickled through the speakers built into his flat screen television. Lucius Sinclair ignored it even though he was grateful for the sudden interruption. His pale hands were clammy, but they had finally stopped trembling. Vocational school was supposed to be different, he thought as the empire’s proud melody attempted to break through his concentration. Remus is in security, and I’m far away with the artisans…He swallowed and ran his fingers through his short hair.
Wisps of blonde fell in front of his eyes when the anthem was silenced by The Great Seal. Lucius gazed at the silver eagle; its downcast eyes were a reflection of the pain in his own. Did it have a twin brother whose only purpose in life was to-
“Good evening, citizens!” Ron and Barbara, the empire’s most popular news team, appeared on his TV. Their maroon business jackets complemented the khaki undertones of their skin. Barbara’s straight teeth glistened in the camera lens. “As you all know, the Annual Noble Treaty Festival is just around the corner!”
“That’s right, Barb,” Ron smiled. “In just two weeks, the streets will be paved in celebrations!” he winked. “But you and I both know that the unofficial partying has already gotten underway. Emperor Deigo Clinton is especially fond of the pre-festivities festivities.” Ron and Barbara placed their hands to their hearts, “as all citizens should be. The Noble Treaty Festival is an annual celebration that marks the birth of our great empire.” There was a pause. “The schedule of events has been released, but first to you, Barb.”
“Thank you, Ron. Before we can release the schedule, I have some sour news to report.” The cheesy grin that had been plastered over her face was replaced with a sullen frown. “A creeping twelp was captured yesterday.” A square of video footage appeared on the top right corner of the screen. A voke in a green beret with a face no older than his own stared from it, eyes wide.
“Vocational student Miles Cunningham was arrested for creeping the thoughts of his instructor. He has been found guilty and is scheduled for termination.” The image shifted. The same young man was sitting on a steel bench in a prison cell. His eyes seemed hollow, lined with circles, and his skin was a deathly shade of white. Lucius shuddered and glanced away.
“Just eighteen years old,” Ron sighed. “Let this be a lesson to our viewers: this is what happens when parents don’t do the right thing upon infancy.” Lucius rose and walked to the back of his dorm room. It wouldn’t shut out the annoying broadcast, but at least he could plug his ears, close his eyes, and pretend it wasn’t happening.
He could always step out into the hall, but the TV at the end of it would only be blaring the same thing. The young man frowned. So much for a welcome interruption…At this point, he wasn’t sure if he preferred the nasty spam of messages from his brother over Ron and Barb’s eerie story. His brother’s latest antic was showing off his stupid hemp tattoo and saying that Lucius better remember it—“Else, I’ll pound your face into the wall on my next weekend pass. Hoorah! The Prowling 42nd!”
It was a ridiculous and hideous thing. On his forearm was a bulky omega symbol with two dots and “42nd” beneath it. Remus was waving it around in his last message like it was some sort of macho ritual. Ugh… never mind him. Keep your head low. Don’t be an idiot like Miles Cunningham…Don’t get caught.
