SGS: The World of Tomorrow!

It’s time for another Seriously Geeky Sunday brought to you by the creative Heather at geeking-by.net!

Today’s prompt was so much fun to dig into because Retro Futurism is one of my all time favorite aesthetics. Kid me’s vision of 2020 would have looked like a mixture of this with flying cars:

June 28th – Technology

June 23rd is Alan Turing’s birthday, and Turing was a British computer scientist who developed the Enigma machine during World War II. His work in computer science was groundbreaking and he theorised about artificial intelligence. Today we’re thinking about technology in fictional worlds:

What is the weirdest fictional technology item you’ve seen?

The stove pipe reporter’s hat from Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

What is the most disastrous technological innovation?

Single use plastics like packaging, beer pong cups, and shampoo containers. I feel like they’ve made us lazy, and when we’re done with them, we just throw them away without a second thought. They’re piling up with no end in sight.

I hope they come up with a biodegradable alternative soon, I mean the year is 2020, but then again the year is 2020

The other disastrous innovation(s) is weapons of mass destruction. I don’t need to go too deep into that one for obvious reasons.

Who is your favourite robot/droid?

Data – Not only is he a walking computer with all the intelligence the universe has to offer, but he is kind, friendly, and has a deeply human side. It made me so happy when Q gave him the gift of laughter for saving his life.

What fictional futuristic item do you think will become real one day?

Starships – SpaceX is developing one this very moment!

What futuristic vehicle would you love to take for a ride?

A flying car.

I’ve been fascinated with them ever since I can remember. I used to hope that the year 2000 would bring us flying cars, but it’s 2020, and I don’t see it happening anytime soon.

I am pleased that they are working on self driving cars! I’ll settle for that.

If you could have any character/celebrity be the personality for a supercomputer, who would it be?

Data from TNG because he wouldn’t play pranks or get snarky (let’s just say that the supercomputer would be smashed to bits if it played pranks on me or got an attitude….lol).

My Mobile Addiction

Up until now, I’ve used my smartphone as a pocket Internet device and an “avoid awkward social situations when I’m not in the mood to make small talk by pretending to text” machine…oh, and phone.  I never understood the fascination with mobile games.

I just had to find the right game. My brain’s current state: “Where’s my phone? I need to check my game!” #TheStruggleIsReal

I’ve seen a lot of pictures floating around lately of pictures of young adults on their phones with captions like “Missing the beauty of the world one text at a time.” Do the creators of these “funny” images consider the fact that maybe the young adult is researching said beauty?

Mobile devices are useful. We have instant access to a vast, worldwide library of information (okay, and silly cat gifs too). Let us not forget that we can access GPS at the drop of a hat now. The kicker? All of this fits right in our pockets now. We can access it anywhere, anytime. Before I go off on a crazy tangent, I need to get back to the point of this post: my mobile addiction!

I consider it therapeutic. Life can be stressful, and let’s face it: adulting can be a handful sometimes!

Kitty Collector

Your super cute, crazy cat lady enabler!

It’s completely free, and you don’t have to “buy” anything to feel like you’re making progress. You start with a yard and some fish. You use the fish as currency to buy toys to attract the cats…Let your inner crazy cat lady shine!

There are no ads except for when you tap on “news” to get the daily password (you have to have wifi or mobile data turned on to get the password).

Sometimes you’ll see a cat holding a book in it’s mouth when you go to the menu “Marshmallow has a special brochure for you!” Tap it, and it’s an ad. I have to say it’s a clever way to get an ad into a game. It’s not invasive, and you choose whether or not you want to read cute little Marshmallow’s brochure.

Carriage Return

I’m still battling that cold; only, I don’t know if what I’m battling is a new cold, or if the one I had before decided to take a turn for the annoying. I like having a good time. Constant sneezing and runny noses are not it, especially the runny nose.

Let’s focus on something that’s totally radical (I could whine for an hour about how much this cold sucks). What is this totally radical thing? Technology! I was sitting at my desk yesterday (I got a good round of editing in for The Year is Now).

“Bloop! Bloop! Bloop!” The tablet on my desk suddenly started making a noise. I picked it up, opened it, and saw that a relative was trying to skype me, a video call.

I remember when the idea of a video call was something only found in sci-fi and hopeful predictions of the future. Computers were just merging into the consumer marketplace when I was a kid.

“Typed or handwritten?” was a common question after teachers handed out reports. I would always cringe when it had to be typed (imagine that!). Carriage return, anyone?

I also remember when a representative from one of the local computer companies came to my school and talked about the advances they were developing and how “one day, computers will be able to fit in your hand!” Fifth grader me laughed at the idea of a computer that could fit in your hand.

Well, snarky fifth grade me, I own a computer that fits in my pocket. It makes phone calls, takes pictures, calculates tips, and much more. This may seem like nothing to the generation after mine, but it means a lot to me! It has been fascinating to experience technology as it advances. It has come so far!
