A Fun Filled Year of Blogging

Today marks one year since Heather launched Seriously Geeky Sundays. Has it been a year already? It feels like it was yesterday that I stumbled upon Pinterest in a desperate search for blog prompts that were actually enjoyable for me.

Before I start rambling and take the thunder away from today’s questions, I’ll just dive right in.

But first, wishing everyone a happy Easter! Maybe one day soon things will start getting back to normal. 

4th April – Happy First Birthday SGS!

One year ago Seriously Geeky Sundays was launched and this week we’re celebrating our first birthday by looking back over the last year of prompts.

What was your favourite theme?

Conventions – It was so much fun to sit down and write about my unique perspective on working at conferences. I enjoyed reading everyone’s perspectives as attendees! 

Cosplay – Talking about one of my favorite pastimes was a blast (albeit, I’ve been lazy with cosplaying incognito over the past year for obvious reasons), and again, it was so much fun reading everyone’s posts and looking at their cosplay pictures. 

What theme did you like the least?

There aren’t any I disliked. Heather put a lot of thought and energy into creating six exciting prompts each week–can we give her a giant THANK YOU for doing this? I know how hard it is to come up with things to write about, and she’s been doing it every single week for the past year! 

Thank you, Heather, for bringing strangers together through fandoms and blogs. It has helped me get through 2020.

What question made you think the most?

Many of them forced me to consider things I haven’t thought about, and for that I am glad. It is good to experience something different or something that puts you out of your comfort zone every so often. I’ve enjoyed answering questions I wouldn’t normally stumble upon.

After skimming through past SGS posts, I decided on What is your favourite wedding scene? from What’s Your Cup of Coffee? for two reasons: 1. I don’t particularly like the romance genre, so it was extra challenging to come up with an answer about scenes I tend to skip (ha ha!). 2. I ended up writing a piece of fan-fiction that enabled me to come up with a wedding scene I actually liked.

Which theme reminded you of something you’d forgotten?

Welcome to Grasshopper’s Realm – The World Wide Web of Us. I managed to find one of my ancient angelfire sites from the early 2000s and take a dive down memory falls. I spent a good amount of time sifting through long forgotten drawings and journal entries from yesteryear.

What do you enjoy most about Seriously Geeky Sundays?

I’m so glad I found it last year. As Winst0lf said in his post, the pandemic put a huge damper on inspiration, and I could barely get a sentence out, let alone a full blog post. I couldn’t believe my luck after scrolling through endless cycles of the same Live Laugh Love journal prompts on pinterest and spotting Heather’s SGS.

SGS forces me to keep my creative mind flowing because the prompts are things I’m interested in and aren’t your run of the mill, generic questions. I’ve enjoyed meeting new people through it and cannot wait to see what the second year of SGS brings.

What themes or subjects would you like to see come up this year?

  •  Geeking by in a COVID-19 World – How has everyone coped during the insanity that was 2020? What geeky things got you through it all?

For the first time in several years, I am home for Easter. Normally I am on the West Coast for work and would be taking a train to see my sister or father (or aunt/uncles!). While I am sad that I won’t get to see them this year, I am thankful that everyone is safe and healthy, and hopefully I’ll be able to see them over the summer.

Because I’m normally on the other side of the country, I forgot to stock up on Easter candy and Easter things! 

Without further ado, here is this week’s Seriously Geeky Sunday!

12th April – Easter & Spring

Who is your favourite bunny?

Frank the Rabbit in Donnie Darko…Okay, I’ll pick a less creepy favorite! Bugs Bunny was *the* rabbit when I was a kid. Looney Tunes was the most exciting thing on the planet for 5 year old me, ha ha!

Spring is a time of rebirth so thinking about fictional worlds and characters; what does rebirth mean to you?
  • A second chance
  • A chance to try again–to keep trying until you accomplish your goal(s)
  • A chance to let yourself blossom and thrive
Easter wouldn’t be the same without Easter Eggs; if you could have anything hatch from an egg what would it be?

This is easy! A dragon. I’d ride it across the seven kingdoms 😉  Flying and fire = WIN. 

What fictional location reminds you of spring?

Spring here is chaotic. One year it will be mild and warm, another year it will be endless, miserable rain, and another year it will have scattered snowstorms. It’s not my favorite season when it’s the latter two, so I’ll have to go with a summer in Winterfell – it can be cold there when the ravens cry “Summer! Summer!”

An Easter egg isn’t just a chocolate treat it’s also a hidden item for fans to spot. What’s your favourite easter egg?

I am the worst person to spot Easter eggs in movies and television. I even googled this to see if there were any I unknowingly found, but nothing rang a bell. The same goes for riddles. It’s just not a skill I have, ha ha!

A High Castle Easter

Ed smiles as he carries a carton of hard boiled eggs. Some of them are dyed in earthy yellows, oranges, and reds, while the others retain their natural brown state. His heart races, not out of fear, but out of joy. When was the last time he, Frank, and Jules were together? And now he had Jack; this was going to be an Easter to remember!

He pauses for a moment and places the first egg underneath a rose bush. Yes, it was a bit childish, but in a world of sorrow, sadness, and death, there needed to be little echos of light.

Hope.

He places the second egg in a patch of grass. His stomach growls. They were going to enjoy the eggs with salt, pepper, and bottles of Fanta later on. Jack said he had a surprise for them. Ed beams. The sun is out, bathing the small village in warmth. 

Today was going to be a good day.

More than you ever wanted to know about my new motherboard, CPU, and ram.

Last time I posted, I was lamenting over my computer situation. I lament no more! I have a tablet, and it helped feed my addiction to the Internetz, but it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles as a full blown computer. Tapping and scrolling are okay for simple, mindless surfing, but for anything more than that… *pulls at hair*

I had a lot of help from my comrade in arms getting all of this installed. I learned a hell of a lot about installation! I ended up deciding to replace the essentials. For less than $400, I have a working computer that is twice as powerful as my old one. I had to give in because I need a computer!

My review of everything is posted below. If anything changes, I’ll make an update. So far I give everything 5/5 happy computers.

I’m still trying to find Photoshop. I found an ancient Photoshop disc from from the early 2000s (possibly earlier!). I want to do some more searching before I install my retro copy. 😉

CPU: Intel core i5-4460 (quad core!)
I could have gone for a beautiful (yet pricey) i7, but I am not running any virtual servers or dummy terminals, and I highly doubt Lord of the Rings Online needs an i7, ha ha! So far this little chip is awesome.  I was terrified of installing it (my comrade in arms did the installation and showed me how to do it). It’s not so scary after all because it’s mostly a matter of “the round peg goes in the round hole; the square box goes in the square hole!” You just put a dab of the thermal past onto the heat sink and install the fan.

My old motherboard was about ten years old. I had to get new ram (DDR3) to accommodate it. Eventually I will get a new video card (thankfully it has a regular PCI slot). It is a little smaller than the old one, but it still fits in my case beautifully.

I just want to rave about and praise how lovely the bios looks and how easy it was to install the drivers from the disc that came with it. The bios is more advanced than any bios I had seen before. You can navigate with your mouse, and the graphics are a step up from the old blue and white standard.

The driver disc came with a tool set that allows you to easily monitor the temperature of your CPU (among other things). FYI: you want your CPU to stay below 50 degrees Celsius (this is important if you do a lot of gaming or video/photo editing). It also came with Chrome. I am the queen of lazy. With the click of a few buttons, I had all the drivers, the tool set, and Chrome installed.

Oh, and the Operating System install? Within 30 minutes, it was up and running!

It’s ram…It’s fast. It does what ram does and fits in the DDR3 slots. 😛

There you have it, more than you ever wanted to know about my new computer setup. I will shed tears when the credit card bill comes, but it was all worth it!
